Investing in Early Education

The early childhood years are arguably the most important years in an individual’s life. The brain is developing at a rapid pace from birth to age five and this represents a critically important window of opportunity to develop a child’s full potential and shape key cognitive, emotional, and social skills necessary for success later in life. In fact, a child’s brain is 80% developed by age three. Quality early childhood education can help foster these skills even among the most disadvantaged youth.

According to James Heckman, nobel laureate, economist, and author of the Heckman Equation, every dollar invested in early childhood programs yields a 7-10% annual return through increased productivity and lower spending on social programs such as remedial education, welfare programs, and criminal justice.
